Prepare Your Home for Medical Equipment Needs

Whether you’ve had a planned surgery or an unexpected medical crisis, it’s helpful to get your home ready for your return. At West Park 55+ Active Retirement Community, we know you’ve made the decision to move into a “forever” home now that you’re retired and want your home to meet all of your needs. It’s paramount to ensure your space is ready for medical equipment such as walkers, wheelchairs, oxygen machines, and hospital beds so you can be safe in your home and focus on healing. These practical tips can help you navigate your home safely while you recover.

In the Living Room

Tripping hazards are a big concern. Don’t use loose throw rugs, which can be especially dangerous while using crutches or a walker. Make sure your rooms have adequate lighting especially near doorways. Remove or secure any loose wires or cords that could be a tripping hazard. Oxygen machines will need access to an outlet so clear a space where it can sit out of the way and the cord is not running across the room.

In the Bathroom

Slips and falls can be reduced in the bathroom by installing grab rails near the toilet and bathtub. These should be installed vertically or horizontally, but not diagonally. Using a shower chair can also improve safety. If possible, consider getting a raised toilet. A raised toilet seat can also be used as a short-term solution. Also, use non-slip rugs outside the bathtub.

In the Bedroom

If you are in need of a hospital bed, clearing out your bedroom of excess furniture may be necessary. The electric hospital beds will need access to an outlet and also room to move. If you are still using your own bed, make sure it’s set at a height that is not too difficult to get in and out of. Reducing tripping hazards like in the living room apply here, as well.

In the Kitchen

Place your most used kitchen items – plates, cups, silverware, etc. – in an easy-to-reach place on your kitchen counter. This will be especially helpful if you are using a wheelchair. Avoid storing food or items you use every day in the highest or lowest cupboard areas. Use sturdy chairs around the table or put one in storage to make room for your wheelchair.
